Crisis Brews at FMC Abeokuta NANNM Over Election of New Officers
A fresh controversy is brewing within the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta Unit, over the forthcoming election of new officers.
A petition purportedly written by concerned nurses at the FMC Abeokuta has accused the Ogun State NANNM Chairman, Comrade Adejoke Bello, of allegedly interfering in the electoral process ahead of the unit election.
The petitioners alleged that Mrs. Bello had already begun manipulating the process, particularly through what they described as the opening of platforms for the unit electoral officers and alleged interference with the screening of prospective candidates.
According to the petition, the State NANNM leadership allegedly overruled aspects of the electoral guidelines during the screening process in a manner the petitioners claimed was intended to favour certain candidates.
The petitioners also alleged that some individuals who allegedly do not possess current and updated professional licences have been allowed to campaign for elective positions.
They questioned the propriety of allowing candidates whose professional credentials are allegedly not up to date to participate in the electoral process, insisting that the rules guiding the election must be applied equally to all aspirants.
“Concerned FMCA nurses are not going to take these illegalities being perpetrated by Comrade Bello as these attempts would be resisted to the end,” the petition stated.
The petitioners consequently called on the State NANNM Chairman to close what they described as an “illegal platform” and allow the unit electoral committee to carry out its responsibilities without interference.
They described the alleged actions as “barbaric and unacceptable,” and urged stakeholders to ensure that the forthcoming election is conducted in accordance with the established guidelines.
NANNM's official structure recognises Unit General Meetings (UGM) and Unit Executive Committees (UEC) among its governing organs at the unit/branch level, while the association states that membership is open to licensed nurses and midwives.
