Tinubu Directs EFCC to Vacate Court Order Freezing Osun State Government Accounts

 

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately approach the court to vacate an order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government.  

The presidential directive follows mounting political tension in Osun State ahead of its governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.  

The EFCC’s account restriction came after months of ongoing investigations into allegations of financial misconduct.

Tinubu, in a statement he personally signed statement, expressed deep embarrassment over the timing of the anti-graft agency’s actions. 

The president while acknowledging that the EFCC acted within its statutory mandate and possessed a valid court order obtained on August 5, emphasized that the proximity to the state election raised significant concerns about perceived political bias.  

"I feel deeply embarrassed not by the EFCC's exercise of its mandate backed by a court order, but by the timing of the agency's action. Every action taken by an institution of State... is always credited to me, as the President, even when I may not have had any prior knowledge," the President stated.

He further stressed that nothing should be done to give the impression that federal law enforcement agencies are being weaponized to influence the electoral process.
