Ogun 2027: Yewa Stakeholders Pick Adebutu Over Yayi

Stakeholders from Ogun West Senatorial District have declared their support for the Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Ladi Adebutu, against the governorship ambition of Adeola Olamilekan Adeola.

The region, according to the group under the banner of Ogun West Concerned Stakeholders, must be represented by a candidate with clear ancestral roots and a proven record of loyalty to Yewa’s political struggle.

One of the Stakeholders, Mr Akeem Adetunji, while speaking on behalf of the group, at a news conference held in Tetede Hall, Ilaro, described Yayi’s ambition as an attempt to deny “true sons of Yewa” their rightful place in Ogun politics.

Adetunji while warning that history would not be kind to such actions, insisted that Yayi remains an “imported politician,” in the region.

He expressed concerns over the indigeneity of the APC flagbearer, alleging that the senator lack contribution to Ogun West’s governorship aspirations in past elections.

According to the stakeholders, Yayi was absent during key political moments in the district, especially during the 2011 and 2015 polls when Yewa candidates were in the governorship race.

They further accused him of working against Ogun West’s interest in 2019, when the district fielded a single governorship candidate.

“We are here to write our story,” Adetunji said. “In 2011, when the late Olurin contested, Senator Yayi was nowhere to be found. In 2015, during the governorship bid of Gboyega Isiaka, we still did not see him. He was never part of our history or journey.”

Adetunji questioned Yayi’s contributions in subsequent election cycles, particularly in 2019 and 2023.

“In 2019, he worked against the success of Ogun West. He stood against the land he now claims as his own,” he alleged.

The stakeholders also accused the senator of deliberately frustrating the 2023 governorship ambition of Biyi Otegbeye, describing it as a move driven by personal political calculations rather than regional interest.

“In 2023, when Ogun West had a rare opportunity with a single candidate, Senator Yayi deployed his influence, resources and network to ensure that the vision did not succeed,” Adetunji added.

The group, which claimed the backing of over 5,000 members across the district, announced its support for Oladipupo Adebutu, saying his lineage and political history are firmly rooted in Ogun State.

Another speaker, Adeshola Hakeem, accused Yayi of resurfacing in Ogun West only during election periods, without any tangible family ties or sustained investment in the local community.

“I don’t believe in someone who suddenly appears and claims to be from here,” Hakeem said. “We have not seen his antecedents, his long-term impact or his consistent contribution to Ogun West or Ogun State.”

Corroborating this position, Mrs. Olabisi Ogundare, a community leader from Ward 1 in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area, openly declared her support for Adebutu, stating that Yayi’s local lineage is unknown in the area.

“They say he is from Ogun West, but we don’t know him,” she said. “As someone from Ward 1 in Ilaro, I have not known him before. He may claim to be an indigene, but we know Ladi Adebutu.”

The stakeholders maintained that Ogun West must not compromise its future by backing candidates without shared history, identity and commitment to the long-standing aspiration of the Yewa people ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
