Ogun Police Arraigns NYSC Official Over Corp Member's Death In Abeokuta

 

The Local Government Inspector of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), identified as Abbas Olalekan, has been arraigned before an Isabo Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital, over the death of a female Corps member, identified as Victoria Ariyo.

The arraignment followed Ariyo’s death allegedly caused by the pregnancy complications.

The embattled NYSC staff attached to the Abeokuta south local government area of the state pleaded not guilty to the two charges of alleged conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion preferred against him.

The prosecutor, assistant superintendent of police Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that Olalekan committed the offences between January and March, this year, at Ikereku area of Laderin in the metropolis.

“that you Abbas Olalekan and others at large, between January and march 2026, at Ikereku area, Laderin, Abeokuta, in the Abeokuta magisterial district, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit abortion and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 516 of the criminal code laws of Ogun state 2006’, the charge sheet read.

 “that you: Abbas Olalekan and others at large on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did unlawfully attempt to procure abortion by supplying Ariyo Victoria Olapeju ‘f” drugs and thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under section 230 of the criminal code laws of Ogun state 2006’, it added

Counsel for the defendant, Bunmi Adelabu, however, applied for his bail in the most liberal terms.

Magistrate A. K. Araba, who presided over the matter, granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Mrs Araba explained that one of the sureties must be a blood relative while the other must be gainfully employed.

The magistrate, however, ordered Olalekan to be remanded at the Ibara correctional Centre pending perfection of the bail conditions while she adjourned the matter till April 14 for further hearing.
