Women Rights Group Demands More Representation, Seeks 74 Legislative Seats

Womens right group, Nigerian League of Women Voters (NILOWV) has launched a peaceful advocacy drive in Ogun State, demanding 74 seats for women in the country's political space. 

The advocacy drive saw NILOWV members submitting letters to federal lawmakers, including Olumide Osoba and Afolabi Afuwape, advocating for gender inclusion and affirmative action.

One of the group leaders, Mrs Omotunde Coker, while speaking during the outreach, insisted that it's time the women take their rightful place in leadership positions.

"NILOWV's campaign aims to promote an inclusive political system, empower women through voter education, and combat electoral violence and discrimination. 

She explained that the group's demand for 74 seats is a call for increased representation and participation of women in governance. Mrs. Coker added, 

Mrs. Oluyemisi Egbeyemi, a speaker at the event, stressed that "women's empowerment is key to national development."

"We are not asking for favors, but for our rightful place in the scheme of things."

"The advocacy drive is a shift towards structured and strategic engagement, seeking to reshape Nigeria's democratic landscape. 

Alhaja Olalekan Oyenike, another speaker, noted that "women are not just beneficiaries of democracy, but active participants."

"NILOWV continues to push for women's empowerment and inclusive governance.

"We believe that women's participation in politics will bring a new perspective to governance and enhance development."

The group's efforts have been praised by many, including Honourable Olumide Osoba, who said, "I commend NILOWV for their tireless efforts in promoting women's empowerment and good governance."

Also responding to the delegation, Hon. Afuwape commended the group for adopting a peaceful and structured channel in presenting their demands. 

He assured them of his commitment to carefully review the letter and take the necessary steps.
