2027 World Teacher's Day, Ola-Williams, Promises Better Welfare, Review Pension Scheme

Ogun State governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief (Dr.) Yinka Ola-Williams, has felicitated teachers across the state on the occasion of the 2027 World Teachers’ Day, pledging to prioritise their welfare and review policies affecting their pensions if elected governor.

Ola-Williams, in a goodwill message marking the annual celebration, described teachers as indispensable to the development of human capital and the future of Ogun State, noting that no meaningful development can be achieved without a motivated and adequately rewarded teaching workforce.

The SDP candidate promised that his administration would introduce better welfare packages for teachers and ensure that their legitimate financial entitlements are treated with the urgency they deserve.

He said his administration would also review what he described as the controversial pension scheme affecting teachers and other public servants, with a view to ensuring fairness, transparency and improved retirement security.

“Teachers are the builders of every profession. Every doctor, engineer, lawyer, farmer, administrator and leader has passed through the hands of a teacher. They therefore deserve a government that recognises their sacrifices and gives them the dignity they deserve,” Ola-Williams said.

He assured teachers that under an SDP government, deductions made from their salaries would be remitted promptly to the appropriate institutions and would no longer be allowed to accumulate unnecessarily.

“We will ensure that deductions made from workers’ salaries are remitted as and when due. Workers should not have to fight government to account for money that has already been deducted from their salaries,” he stated.

According to him, the welfare of teachers would go beyond payment of salaries, stressing that a comprehensive welfare system must encompass working conditions, professional development, housing, healthcare, retirement benefits and other incentives capable of improving their quality of life.

Ola-Williams further promised to create an environment where teachers could perform their duties without undue financial or administrative pressures.

“A teacher who is worried about unpaid deductions, an uncertain pension future or poor working conditions cannot give his or her best to the children. We must address these issues if we genuinely want to improve the quality of education in Ogun State,” he said.

The SDP candidate also called on teachers to remain committed to their professional responsibilities, describing teaching as a noble vocation and a critical pillar of sustainable development.

He said his administration, if elected in 2027, would pursue policies that would restore confidence in the public education system and make teachers active partners in the transformation of the state.

“Our teachers will not be treated as mere employees. They will be recognised as strategic partners in building the Ogun State we all desire. Their voices will be heard, their welfare will matter and their contributions will be properly valued,” Ola-Williams added.

He congratulated teachers on the occasion and urged them to continue inspiring younger generations despite the challenges confronting the profession.

Ola-Williams wished teachers across Ogun State renewed strength, professional fulfilment and improved welfare, assuring them that the SDP would remain committed to policies aimed at putting workers and human capital development at the centre of governance.
