Coalition Begs Jonathan To Join 2027 Presidential Race

Some Nigerians have again renewed the calls to former president Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential polls.

This followed the growing wave of calls from political groups and diaspora organizations urging the former leader to return to partisan politics ahead of the 2027 polls after rejecting similar push in 2022.

Hundreds of youths under the aegis of the coalition for Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday besieged the Abuja residence of former president to beg him to contest the 2027 presidential poll.

During the rally the demonstrators chanted slogans, danced and displayed placards calling on Jonathan to return to active politics.

Some of the inscriptions read, “GEJ: Nigeria is dying, save it!” “GEJ, Nigerian youths break the medicine wey dem do you,” and “GEJ, if you no run, we quench.”

National president of the coalition, Tom Ohikere, while addressing newsmen, said the group had embarked on nationwide consultations before staging the demonstration.

Ohikere explained that the nationwide consultation over a period of six months showed that Nigerians are clamouring for Jonathan’s return to power to rescue the country.

He described Jonathan as a unifying figure capable of addressing Nigeria’s current political and economic challenges.

According to him, the group will sustain pressure until the former president responds to their demands.

However, the former president is yet to make any official response to the calls from within and outside Nigeria.

It will be recalled that there had been widespread debate over the legality and political implications of Jonathan contesting under the constitution, having taken the oath of office twice and as well spend over five years in office which will be at variance with stipulated eight years of two terms.
