ADC: Atiku Rejects Calls To Step Down For A Southern Candidate
Former Vice president Atiku Abubakar has insisted that he will contest the 2027 Presidential ticket of the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The Chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) strongly rejected the pressures from the Southern political leaders and stakeholders appealing to him to step aside for Southern presidential candidate to emerge for the 2027 polls.
According to the Southern leaders, many who are notable members
of the coalition, asked Atiku not to contest the ticket in other to allow equity,
justice, and rotation of power, especially to allow the South deserves to
complete its eight years tenure presidency out of President Bola Tinubu is
currently spending four years.
But, Atiku, in a statement issued at the end of a closed-door meeting with leaders of ADC, vowed that he would not yield to pressure and called on the coalition to uphold democracy by allowing open and transparent primaries.
“I will not be pressured into abandoning my constitutional right
to aspire. Let every qualified member test their popularity through a credible
primary. Zoning must not be used to silence competence,” Atiku insisted.
Recall that Notable Southern Presidential hopefuls include the immediate past transportation minister, Rotimi Amaechi and 2023 Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, among others.
