Abiodun's Last Minute Intervention Fails To End Ogun Workers Strike

  

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has failed to convince the striking workers on the payroll of both the State and Local Government to end the ongoing four day old industrial action in the State.

Despite the last minute intervention of the governor who chaired the meeting with the leadership of the organised labour in the State, the negotiation again ended in a deadlock.

The workers have embarked on an indefinite strike to compel the government to meet their demands which include abolishing the controversial Contributory Pension Scheme and failure to clear the outstanding gratuity payments, payment of outstanding gratuity and pension, inadequate implementation of the new minimum wage, especially the consequential adjustment, among others.

Labour Unions team headed by the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Hammed Ademola-Benco and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Comrade Akeem Lasisi.

Though the details of the meeting which was held behind the closed door at the instance of the State government was not made public.

However, NEWSREPORTER gathered that the Governor failed to convince the union leaders to call off the ongoing strike as they insisted on the strike until their demands are met.

The Union Leaders had insisted that Abiodun must make concrete commitments on the workers' demands.

The implications of the development is that the industrial action will continue.

Meanwhile, the four day old strike has crippled activities and services at the public institutions in the state.

Public schools, courts and hospitals were under locks and keys, while both the local and state Secretariat looked deserted as the workers complied fully with the directive.
