Iyalomo Initiative Honours Iconic Egba Women, Calls For Recognition of Women Contributions in Nigeria

 

The Iyalolomo Initiative has introduced a platform to honour notable women from Egba extractions who had played significant roles in shaping the history in Ogun State.

The laudable development occurred during the launching of the initiative in Abeokuta, the state capital, to honor the invaluable contributions of women to Nigeria’s educational, political, and economic development.

The maiden edition of the initiative which focused on the historic roles of iconic motherhood of Mrs Efunroye Tinubu, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and Bisoye Tejuosho.

During the event, several scholars, advocates, and stakeholders from different strata of the society were brought together with a call to reshape narratives that marginalized women and girls in society.

Professor Oluyemisi Adebowale, Delivering a keynote lecture entitled “Egba Women Who Shaped History,” called for stronger advocacy toward women’s empowerment and their inclusion in leadership and top decision-making positions.

Professor Adebowale explained that there is need to celebrate the courage and influence of past iconic women in the country, describing them as warriors and world-shapers.

The Scholar added that the government at all levels must create more opportunities for women to lead across all sectors and ensure equal access to education and leadership for the girl- child.

He also appealed to the parents and guardians to guide their children with strong moral values and support their aspirations from an early age.

The guest lecturer, however, asked the women to embrace purposeful and inclusive leadership over flamboyant displays, encouraging them to build a society where leadership is accessible to all, regardless of gender.

Former Governor Olusegun Osoba of Ogun State, who was Chairman of the occasion in his remark, said there is need for the female participation in governance.

Aremo Osoba, represented by Barrister Adeyemi Adekunle, commended the initiative for such transformational focus and commitment worthy of emulation by others.

The lead Converner, Iyalolomo Initiative, Professor Yemi Oke, in his address, said the initiative was aimed not only to celebrate women’s past achievements but also to inspire future generations to take bold steps in shaping a more inclusive Nigeria.

Highlight of the occasion was the presentation of awards to the family representatives of the three iconic women, in recognition of their contributions to the uplift of motherhood.
