Woman drowns after canoe capsizes on Lagos River

A local farmer’s wife, simply identified as Abosede, has drowned in a capsized boat on the Erekiti River in Lagos State.

Her husband, Jesuyon and their 17-year-old sister, Mary, survived during the incident which occurred on Sunday while they were returning from their farm.

Jesuyon managed to swam to safety with his sister-in-law, but was unable to rescue his wife as the river swept her away.

Spokesman of Lagos State Police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the tragic incident, said a coordinated search is currently underway to recover Abosede’s body.

“Based on the report, teams of Marine policemen and local divers were mobilised for a search and rescue operation. Efforts are ongoing to recover the missing body. The investigation is in progress,” Hundeyin said.
