Two Eiye Cult members bags seven years jail term in Ogun

An Ogun State Magistrate Court has sentenced two members of Eiye confraternity cult group to seven years imprisonment.

The convicted cult members are identified as 25 years old Kayode Olusegun and 36 years old Joseph Samuel.

They were initially arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, belonging to an unlawful society and breach of public peace.

The prosecutor, Inspector Olaide Rawlings, had told the court that the convicts committed the offence, with some others still at large, on Feb. 9, 2024 around 5pm at Itori Village in Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun.

Rawlings explained the police arrested the defendants at the scene of a clash with a rival cult group.

He added that the defendants confessed that they belonged to the ‘Eiye confraternity cult’.

According to her, the convicts and others now at large conducted themselves in an unruly manner likely to breach public peace.

Rawlings said that the offence contravened Section 45(b) and 34 of the Secret Cults Prohibition and Special Provisions Law of Ogun, 2016.

She said it also contravened Section 70 of the Criminal Law of Ogun, 2006.

The Magistrate, Mrs Omotara Ogundele, in her judgement, held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt that the convicts were guilty as charged.

Ogundele said that the evidence presented by the prosecution was tenable and therefore sentenced the defendants to seven years in prison each without an option of fine.
