Police Inspector goes berserk, kills one, injures two, in Calabar

A police Inspector, identified as Effiong Bassey, has shot dead a 41-year-old civilian, Mrs. Ijoema Obot, in Calabar, the Cross River State.

The officer who went on a rampage in the city on Sunday morning also injured two others after returning from night duty at a Microfinance Bank in Calabar South to the Atakpa Divisional Police Station.

A security source said Bassey, upon his return, refused to surrender his AK-47 rifle, instead cocking the weapon and threatening to shoot his colleagues.

He added that the officer blocked the station’s gate, preventing anyone from entering or leaving the facility.

According to him, all efforts to disarm him through peaceful dialogue failed and upon sighting the tactical police teams mobilized to intervene, he started shooting indiscriminately and in the process shot Obot, the wife of a retired police officer.

The source further stated that Mrs. Obot was confirmed dead at the Police Clinic, while the two injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment.

Spokesman of the State Police Command, Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the incident,  assured the public that the situation was under control.

Ugbo explained that the suspect has been arrested, and the victims are receiving treatment while the authorities are now investigating the cause of the officer’s actions while ensuring that safety and normalcy are restored in the area.
