FAAN shuts Ibadan Airport for upgrading
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria said it has announced the temporary closure of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital.
The closure, according to the airport operator, is to carry out extensive upgrade works on the facility .
Spokesman of FAAN, Mrs Obiageli Oprah, in a statement, said the exercise is to enhance infrastructure and operational standards of the airport.
Orah explained that the Federal Government had approved the closure, which became necessary to enable the execution of critical improvements at the airport.
He added that the closure was in line with aviation safety recommendations, appealing for both stakeholders’ and passengers’ cooperation throughout the closure.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the temporary closure of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA), Ibadan, due to ongoing upgrade works.
“As part of the Oyo State Government’s initiative to upgrade Ibadan Airport from a domestic to an international airport, various improvements and remodelling works are currently underway.
“In compliance with aviation safety recommended standards and processes, the closure became imperative to ensure the safety of passengers as well as airport personnel.”
Recall that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had announced plans to upgrade the airport following the decision of the Federal Government to release the facility to the state government.
