Ogun 2027: Fayoyin Urges Electorates to Scrutinise Candidates’ Character, Sources of Wealth
The Ogun State Governorship Candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM), Hon. Ezekiel Fayoyin, has urged electorates in the state to carefully scrutinise the character, background, sources of wealth and political antecedents of candidates seeking elective offices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Fayoyin said voters must look beyond party affiliations, campaign promises and financial inducements to assess the credibility and integrity of those aspiring to govern the state.
The NRM governorship candidate raised concerns over some candidates reportedly having cases pending before anti-graft agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
He called on the people to demand transparency and accountability from political aspirants, insisting that those seeking public office must be prepared to answer legitimate questions about their past and present conduct.
“Ogun electorates must be wary of candidates with questionable characters. The people must ask critical questions about their sources of wealth, background and antecedents in Ogun politics before deciding who deserves their votes,” Fayoyin said.
He stressed the need for all governorship candidates to be subjected to what he described as a “public court” of scrutiny, where their records, financial backgrounds and public conduct would be thoroughly examined.
According to him, such scrutiny would enable the electorate to make informed choices and prevent the emergence of leaders whose controversies could bring embarrassment to the state.
“Ogun State is too sophisticated, having produced leaders who have played significant roles in Nigeria on many occasions, to produce a governor who will be subjected to public ridicule because of unresolved questions about character, integrity or financial dealings,” he stated.
Fayoyin, however, maintained that allegations or pending investigations should not be treated as proof of guilt, but argued that candidates must demonstrate a willingness to address legitimate concerns about their integrity.
He urged voters, civil society organisations and the media to intensify efforts towards holding political aspirants accountable, noting that the 2027 elections provide an opportunity for the people to demand credible and transparent leadership.
The NRM candidate maintained that the future of Ogun State should not be entrusted to political popularity or financial influence alone, but to individuals whose records, character and commitment to public service can withstand public scrutiny.
