2027: Yinka Ola-Williams Says Adeola’s Ancestry Controversy a Distraction from Ogun’s Real Issues
Ogun State governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief (Dr.) Yinka Ola-Williams, has described the controversy surrounding the ancestry of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as a distraction ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Ola-Williams, who made this known while addressing newsmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, said the debate over Adeola’s place of origin should not overshadow critical issues affecting Ogun State, urging residents to focus on the capacity, antecedents and track records of all candidates seeking to govern the state.
The SDP candidate maintained that the origin of a governorship candidate should not be the primary consideration for voters, stressing that the ability to address the challenges confronting the state should take precedence over ancestry or ethnic considerations.
He argued that the ongoing controversy risked diverting the attention of the electorate from asking candidates pertinent questions about their plans, policy direction and ability to deliver meaningful development.
“I do not care where a candidate comes from, so far as he can address the challenges facing the state,” Ola-Williams was quoted as saying.
According to him, the growing attention given to the ancestry debate could prevent voters from adequately scrutinising the candidates and assessing their suitability for the governorship position.
“It is an attempt to divert the attention of the electorate from asking the right questions and profiling the candidates in order to make the right choice during the poll,” he said.
Ola-Williams urged residents to study the political antecedents of all governorship candidates, stressing that their past performances should form a significant part of the considerations guiding their decisions at the ballot.
He maintained that voters should look beyond campaign rhetoric and political affiliations to examine what each candidate had achieved in previous public offices, including their contributions to governance and the welfare of the people.
“The antecedents of each candidate should be studied, alongside their performances in the past,” he said, adding that such an assessment would enable the electorate to make informed choices based on verifiable records rather than sentiments.
The SDP governorship candidate also cautioned Ogun residents against allowing financial inducements to determine their political choices, warning that accepting money from wealthy political interests could undermine their collective future.
He said the 2027 election presents an opportunity for residents to demand accountability and elect leaders whose priorities align with the needs and aspirations of the state.
“Ogun residents should not trade their future for the moneybags before and during the poll,” Ola-Williams warned.
He called on the electorate to remain focused on substantive governance issues, including development, public welfare and the capacity of candidates to address the challenges confronting the state, rather than allowing the ancestry controversy to dominate political discourse ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The controversy surrounding Adeola’s ancestry has generated reactions from political figures and parties in Ogun State, with the APC candidate rejecting claims questioning his Ogun origin and threatening legal action against some individuals over the allegations.
