ADC Group Calls for Peace, Reconciliation, Unity in Ogun Chapter
The ADC-Nigeria Must Survive (ADC-NMS), Ogun State Chapter, has called on leaders and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State to embrace peace, reconciliation, and unity amid what it described as growing divisions and factional tendencies within the party.
The State Chairman of ADC-NMS, High Chief Maurice Ntom-Chukwu Adindu, JP, and the Ogun State General Secretary, Mr. Dotun Ogunsanya, while speaking at a press conference held on Saturday in Abeokuta, said continued disunity within the party poses a serious threat to its collective political future and electoral success.
The group stated that while differences of opinion are a natural part of democracy, no individual's ambition or factional interest should be allowed to supersede the unity and progress of the party.
According to the statement, "We firmly believe that no individual ambition or factional interest should be greater than the unity and progress of the African Democratic Congress in Ogun State."
The group appealed to party leaders, stakeholders, candidates, aspirants, youth and women leaders, as well as support groups, to embrace dialogue, reconciliation and political inclusiveness in the interest of the party.
To address the crisis, the group proposed the immediate establishment of a high-level Peace and Reconciliation Committee made up of respected and neutral stakeholders.
It also recommended the convening of an ADC Ogun State Unity Summit to resolve grievances and promote mutual understanding among party members.
Other recommendations include the adoption of an inclusive political framework that guarantees fairness, representation and collective participation, as well as the signing of a Unity and Peace Accord by all stakeholders and political tendencies within the party.
The group further urged the State Working Committee, party elders and other leaders to rise above factional interests and provide the leadership needed to reunite the party.
"This is not the time for division, political supremacy battles, or personal ambitions. This is the time for sacrifice, reconciliation, and unity," the statement read.
Emphasising the need for unity ahead of future political contests, the group noted that history has shown that divided political parties rarely succeed.
Quoting a popular saying, the group added, "When brothers fight, strangers inherit their father's house," while expressing hope that wisdom would prevail over division and that unity would lead the party to victory.
