2025 Environmental Day: Society Advocates Proper Plastic Disposal in Ogun
The Abeokuta chapter of Nigeria Environmental Society (NES)
has advocated for proper disposal of plastic waste in order to prevent plastic
pollution.
According to the Society, residents must ensure a safer,
healthier and cleaner environment through a proper management of the plastic
items.
Association’s Chairman, Mr. Jamiu Badmus, who made the call in
a statement to commemorate the 2025 World Environment Day themed, “Putting an
End to Plastic Pollution”, described the call as inevitable.
Badmus explained that while the plastic remained incredibly
beneficial to humankind and provided a living for millions of people, it poses
a serious threat to the environment.
He added that plastic stayed longer and does not degrade
easily, thereby causing countless health and environmental problems.
According to him, the residents should separate plastics
from their regular waste so that they can be sold to nearby recyclers in order
to protect the environment from potential threats.
“Aside from these,
plastic pollution also constitutes a health risk, particularly to aquatic life,
which will invariably come back to the society.
“So, there is a need for residents of the state to put an
end to plastic pollution by properly managing their plastic waste and latching
on to different government initiatives such as the Blue Box Programme
championed by the Ogun State government.”
“The environment is
where we all live, and we depend on it for our survival, so it needs to be
treated with the utmost care and respect,” he said.
Badmus, however, wished the residents in Ogun state a
trouble-free World Environment Day celebration.
