NIMC warns Nigerians against unauthorized NIN card printing
The National Identity Management Commission has expressed worries over the rising cases of unauthorized printing of National Identity Number Card (NIN).
According to the commission, the illegal activities are being perpetrated by some unscrupulous individuals, cyber cafés, and organisations.
NIMC spokesperson, Kayode Adegoke, in a statement, described the act as criminal.
Adegoke explained that the criminals print the ‘NIN’ cards unauthorised, indiscriminately and also charge the public exorbitant fees.
According to him, the commission has not authorised any organisation to print NIN cards.
“The Commission has not authorised any individual or organisation to print any card in place of the NIMC General Multi-Purpose Card. This act is a violation of the NIMC Act No. 23, 2007.
“Accordingly, the general public and organisations are advised to refrain from printing any NIN cards in contravention of the authorised NIMC GMPC. The so-called NIN card is not recognised by NIMC and should not be presented as a means of identification under any circumstances. Security agencies have been alerted to this illicit activity and have been mandated to apprehend those involved. Anyone caught will face the full force of the law.
“The Commission reiterates that the NIN slip is the only legally authorised document for identification and must be verified upon presentation to access services. To address public demand, the Commission has finalised plans to launch the Improved GMPC, which is multifunctional and serves as both a physical means of identification and a payment card. The card is powered by AfriGO, a local payment platform,” the statement reads.
