Oyo Govt Directs Roadside Traders To Quit, Move To Newly Constructed Markets

Oyo Government has directed the roadside traders along the Airport road, Old Ife Road, and Onipepeye, all located in Ibadan, the state capital, to vacate their trading spots.

Alternatively, the state government asked them to move their wares to the newly constructed government markets.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Suleimon Olanrewaju, in a statement, said the traders must quit the roadside of the affected areas on or before October 27.

Olanrewaju explained that the decision is to ensure safety and security of the residents in the state.

The Governor’s aide added that roadside trading poses safety risks to the public, creates environmental hazards, blocks drainage systems and causes a greater risk of flooding.

“The government has provided markets and other designated spaces for trading across the city, making it unnecessary and unsafe for traders to occupy roadsides.”

He, however, warned that anyone who fails to comply with the directive at the expiration of the ultimatum may have their goods seized and as well face legal action.

Olanrewaju urged the residents in the state to continue joining hands in keeping Ibadan and other parts of Oyo State clean, orderly, and well-developed.
