Tinubu Sets To Unveil New INEC Chairman This Week
President
Bola Tinubu is set to name a new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) this week.
The development
followed the decision of the outgoing INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu,
who quit the office following the expiration of his second and final tenure.
Yakubu had
on Tuesday handed over to May Agbamuche-Mbu, a seasoned legal expert, who has
assumed the role of acting chairman pending the appointment of a substantive
successor.
The former
boss of the electoral umpire had notified the President who has formally
accepted his departure.
However, Tinubu
is set to name Yakubu’s successor at the end of Council of State meeting scheduled
for Thursday in Abuja during which he is expected to present the list of
nominees for the vacant INEC Chairman position.
It will be
recalled that Tinubu in accepting Yakubu’s resignation letter, conferred upon him
the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in recognition
of his service to the country.
