16 burnt to death in Ogun lone accident

 


No fewer than 16 persons have been burnt to death in a ghastly lone autocrash along Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State.

Three others were also critically injured during the tragic incident which occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Buhari Estate axis of the road involving a white Mazda bus registered as KJA 949 YJ.

Spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Florence Okpe, who confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta, the State Capital, said the victims were burnt beyond recognition.

Okpe attributed the suspected cause of the accident was a fire outbreak in the vehicle.

She explained that the bus, which was conveying 21 passengers, also had a filled gas cylinder in it, leading to the explosion

“A total of 21 people were involved in the crash. The genders of the victims couldn’t be ascertained at the scene because they were burnt beyond recognition.

“A total of 16 people were killed in the crash, three sustained various degrees of injuries, and two others remained unhurt.

“The suspected cause of the crash was a fire outbreak in the vehicle, which also had a filled gas cylinder in it, leading to the explosion.”

Okpe said the injured victims were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, while the bodies of the dead had been deposited in a morgue.

Meanwhile, the Sector Commander, Akinwumi Fasakin, while sympathizing with the families of the deceased, warned the motorists against transporting highly flammable items without necessary precautions .

Fasakin blamed the accident on the carelessness on the part of the driver.
